The song was recorded to commemorate the Country Music Association Awards reaching its 50th year. Originally, CMA Awards producers had wanted to record a cover of a single song; the idea to instead record a mashup came from Joseph Kahn, who directed the song's music video. The song was recorded in a span of three days in Nashville, Tennessee in June with Shane McAnally as producer, with the music video produced concurrently. The video begins with Paisley gazing out a window as he sings the song's opening lyrics and closes with Parton singing in a field with the rest of the artists. In between, many country music stars can be seen singing, walking, and looking out across digitally-imposed landscapes like fields, farms, backroads, railroad tracks, famous locales like Nashville's Lower Broadway and international landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower, London and the Mesa Arch. On September 19, , select members of the press, industry, and CMA board members got an exclusive first look at the video at Nashville's Belcourt Theatre.
What should be little more than an exercise in nostalgia is the most unexpectedly moving country recording in recent memory. The guest list includes titans of tradition like Alan Jackson and Charley Pride, alongside pop-flavored superstars like Ronnie Milsap and Rascal Flatts. But for all those trappings, it first gained notice as a British pop hit for Olivia Newton-John, who would share top billing with its writer, John Denver, as the most resented genre interlopers of the mid-seventies. He wrote it for the movie he was starring in, Honeysuckle Rose , and it became his biggest pop hit up until that point. First, Parton herself took it to 1 for a second time in , with a new Hollywood pop arrangement befitting its appearance in her film, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. The most powerful part of the song is the traditional arrangement of the bridge, where three of the best traditional vocalists — Reba McEntire, Alan Jackson, and Vince Gill — showcase the pure mountain beauty of its melody. And then, after a moment of silence that recalls the Houston record, we get some of our most powerful female voices in all of their glory: Carrie Underwood, then Martina McBride, then Trisha Yearwood, and then Faith Hill. For those who keep score of such things, Yearwood is still the best. Some things never change. And just when the song seems in danger of going over the top, everyone else falls silent as Dolly Parton, the greatest icon on a record chock full of them, closes it out all on her own, singing words that may have been sung by more powerful voices, but never with the sweet and simple innocence that only she can summon so charmingly.

Produced by Shane McAnally, "Forever Country" was designed to celebrate country music's past and present, and with that in mind, the recording and subsequent music video included an impressive roster of country talent. And while Randy Travis -- one of the leading country stars of the '80s and '90s -- has seen his career sidelined since by a stroke, he made a cameo appearance in the video, and is credited as one of the artists on the single. The track was released as a digital single on September 16, and a second preview of the video was aired on Dancing with the Stars on September The Country Music Association, which helped organize and finance the project, has pledged that all profits realized by "Forever Country" will be used to support the CMA's music education programs.
