On each occasion the fraudster claimed to be a police officer from London; and told the intended victim that they had arrested someone with a cloned bank card in the victim's name. During the fraud, the victim is instructed to "hang up" the phone and dial or to confirm the call is genuine. However, when the victim puts the phone down and re-dials, the call is not disconnected and the fraudster has remained on the line. Victims are then asked to take part in a "covert" or secret investigation which involves withdrawing cash, purchasing Euros, or other items, which are then handed over to a "police courier" because they are needed as "evidence". Victims of this type of fraud known as courier fraud are frequently elderly. The average courier fraud victim in Gloucestershire is 79 years old. The police will never ask you to hand over cash, bank cards, or other items. If you receive a call like this, hang up straight away and use a different phone to contact the police and report the incident.
