With every stitch comes a story! Aran is a style of sweater that takes its name from the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland. Often known as a Fisherman sweater , they are distinguished by their use of complex textured stitch patterns, several of which are combined in the creation of a single garment. The original knitting process for an authentic Aran sweater used untreated unscoured wool. The reason for this is that the untreated wool was naturally water-repellant, making it ideal as a clothing material for the often very wet weather of the Aran Islands. Modern Aran sweaters are made with much softer Merino wool, which is less itchy against the skin. But Aran sweaters are also available in a wide variety of colours to reflect everything special about Ireland and its natural environs. For example, the honeycomb pattern on an Aran jumper is a symbol of the hard-working bee.
