In Naruto and Boruto , many ninja have evolved from villains to heroes. Sasuke stands out as a Ranger making amends for his own sins and that of the Uchiha clan, while former big bad Orochimaru is now supposedly running experiments to better society and encouraging Log and Mitsuki to do good. However, there are others who went in the opposite direction and regressed into the darkness. One of these is Ao, who was recently exposed as a spy for Kara. His fall from grace has been truly tragic. Ao was always one of the deadliest ninja. In his encounter with Shisui Uchiha, an elite Konoha soldier himself, Ao proved his worth, whether it was by weaving one-handed seals or using his Byakugan.

Ao fought on the battlefields ever since he was a young boy. With it, he saw through the genjutsu placed on the Fourth Mizukage , who would lose his life to it after its dispel. Ao noted that as the village was still recovering from the Fourth's passing and thus shouldn't waste time on an event seemingly designed to showcase Gaara as the new Kazekage. After Mei threatened Ao's life after misinterpreting his words as an insult to her marital status, it was ultimately decided the Kiri-nin would not take part in this event. Ao was calm, prideful, stern and was the epitome of a stereotypical masculine individual. This attitude seemed to be caused by his upbringing during the times when Kirigakure was known as the "Village of the Bloody Mist". After surviving the Fourth Shinobi World War, while outwardly becoming mellow and at peace with his glory days behind him, grateful to even be alive, Ao had in reality grown bitter and disillusioned with the Shinobi world due to his belief of having no further purpose in life due to his disability and also due to the current peaceful era. Despite his previous loyalty to Kirigakure, he had not returned to the village since the war's end. Ao also seemed to possess a colder and battle-hungry outlook, seen when he looked forward to taking part in combat for the first time in sixteen years. Openly saying he abandoned his identity as a shinobi long ago, he preferred to rely on the more modern combat methods using Scientific Ninja Tools , noting that they offered great power to those who could never achieve it naturally. At the same time, Boruto noted that Ao still retained some of his former shinobi outlook, particularly being critical of his Water Release usage as a former Kiri-nin. After his defeat at the hands of Boruto Uzumaki , the young genin's mercy and words of using the tools available properly, along with still seeing Ao as a living person with worth resonated with him. This apparently restored his former shinobi pride, as he saved Boruto from an attack meant to kill him and the Konoha-nin and doing so with ninjutsu. He was a middle aged man with blue hair which was styled in a moused-up manner. These talismans reacted when his Byakugan was under threat and would protect it from anyone, even himself.

The latest episode of Boruto cuts a tragic, sympathetic figure for Ao after it was revealed that he turned his back on the shinobi world, believing they'd repeat the mistakes of old. He betrayed Konoha, stealing scientific secrets for the Kara terrorists, and now, after killing Mugino, he's trying to end Team 7 so he can retrieve the Vessel for Jigen. However, after a soul-stirring speech from Boruto, Ao finds redemption thanks to a heroic act. But sadly, he doesn't get to bask in the afterglow as he gets brutally murdered by the man overseeing the recovery mission. After disabling Ao's drones , Boruto defeated the villain using a Rasengan but, rather than kill him to avenge Mugino, Boruto follows in his father's footsteps. Just like how Naruto redeemed Nagato, Obito Uchiha and so many others through lectures, or "talk no jutsu," Boruto makes it clear to Ao he should never have given up hope.

Konohamaru is suspicious of the empty container, and copies data from it. Mugino recognises one of his assailants as a subordinate of Victor 's, and is attacked by an automaton. Mugino urges Konohamaru to run as more automatons appear. In Konoha , Sasuke reveals he hasn't discovered any worthwhile information about Kara , much to everyone's surprise. They speculate their headquarters must be underground, and recall that Kara also has ties to the seal in Boruto 's hand. Katasuke arrives, further stoking Boruto's disdain for scientific ninja tools. Naruto reaffirms their and Katasuke's worth as supports for the Hokage , and assigns Team 7 to escort Katasuke and the prosthetic to another lab.

This is where Ao's outlook on life started to change drastically. He saw through Danzo's scheme and realized he was creating havoc as Ao could have spotted the aura of Shisui's Sharingan on the fiend.

It proved him why he couldn't trust villages like Konoha, but while Ao's squad fought Danzo and Fu one of the Yamanaka clan in Konoha , they had to switch gears to Madara's army and the Great Ninja War. After arriving at the summit in the Land of Iron, Ao sits behind the Kiri curtain listening as the Kage have their meeting. With many other Boruto characters sharing Ao's sentiments, Naruto and the Five Kage might do well to improve how the villages rehabilitate their dyed-in-the-wool veterans. Shikamaru was also rather saddened that Ao became a member of Kara. He also had advanced taijutsu prowess.

While the story is set in a more modern world, it still carries the essence of a ninja, meaning Boruto and his friends continue to fight against some of the mightiest villains with an ever-growing threat of death looming over everyone. Although the series hasn't been going on for long, a lot of the major players have already died, just as they did early on in the Naruto series.

Ao joined the man to the event, only to arrive late as everyone was already leaving. He was "good" while working under Mei, but "evil" now he's serving Kara. He also took one of Katasuke's gauntlets that can create Absorption Sphere to absorb incoming jutsu, and briefly used a prototype Chakra Blade of Katasuke's, before being forced to cast it aside due to the huge chakra consumption. Ao was always one of the deadliest ninja. Ao later assisted Inoichi in creating the barrier which the Sensor Division would be using.
