Three years have been spent being committed to the case, and in the third year, Swann decided to lure out the ring by sending one of her agents, year-old Renee Matlin, undercover at a university. There, Renee befriended Lucy, who happened to be the ring's leader. Lucy apparently gained Renee's trust in order to have an abduction for the both of them be successfully staged. Eventually, the ring catches the attention of Hotch and his BAU team when the bodies of two of the ring's victims are discovered after a car accident kills the driver, one of the ring's members. Swann becomes enraged at the ring for abducting Renee and becomes focused on finding and retrieving her.

Not much specific detail is revealed about the ring, other than it targeted stressed-out college students from all across the U. Their headquarters was at a completed building that was meant to be a rehabilitation center, but usage of it was canceled by investors. When a member, Kyle, got involved in a car accident while transporting the corpses of two of their victims, leading to their discovery, the ring caught the attention of the BAU. Meanwhile, Garcia manages to find a gas station where Kyle was spotted before dying.
