Alaska simple living
We can have those hard conversations.
For some time now, I have been planning to post a blog, but I have been struggling to find some way to sum up the year. This has been an incredibly difficult year for Joe and I, as well as our families. They were born very premature, 22weeks, after a long ordeal in the hospital. It was a miracle to get the time we did with Sophia and to witness her feisty little personality. We have been so loved and cared for by our friends and family through this time, there are no words to even begin to express our gratitude.

It was so nice to enjoy time with family and watch the Seahawks play on tv, instead of listening to the game on the radio.

Winter is not over yet by any means but it is safe to say we have made it through the toughest and coldest months and thankfully so did all of our chickens. Although this was our second winter in Alaska it was our first time raising chickens here and keeping them through the harsh winter season. Chickens are much hardier than folks give them credit for and perfectly capable if the housing and breed has been taken into consideration of surviving cold climates without supplemental heat. It's not that we are against providing heat for our chickens but we know they can live without it and the energy demands of a heat lamp is too great for our small solar system to run continuously in winter. We gave plenty of thought to the temperatures we receive and what our limitations would be keeping chickens. We took our time researching an appropriate chicken breed and the type of coop we wanted to house them in. I learned of the Icelandic landrace during our time in Oregon and immediately fell in love with the thrifty and wild multicolored birds. It seemed like an obvious choice for us once we moved to Alaska but there were other breeds we weren't quick to rule out, including Brahmas, Marans, Americaunas, Isbars, Swedish Flowers, and the more common Buff Orpingtons.

The weight of the snow on the ice had pushed water up through the ice hole and all the cracks. I am now experiencing how rewarding it is to grow your own food, I love cooking with fresh herbs from my little herb garden. As I sit outside typing in a sundress in 70 degree weather, the guilt starts to seep in again. I assume full responsibility as a passenger to keep and maintain my seat and safety for the duration of the ride. After a week on the road of long days, short nights and early mornings, he had finally made it home…almost. I shivered as I took Leto for a quick prance about the neighborhood. I found a certain thrill in knowing it was just me out here in the vast wilderness, and that I had to figure everything out on my own. Try refreshing the page. Winter being our slow time for guests, also means its the time to repair and spruce things up for tourist season. Gosh, I love girlfriends. Unpin post from top 0 of 4 pinned.

My dad pretending he caught the big one. It was a tight fit with all of our stuff, my bag tried to take over my seat the whole flight back to Talkeetna. We were together for the first stretch of substantial time together in over a year. The border was slow that day, only one car lay ahead of us, which could either mean a guard who was grateful for light-duty or one who was bored and wanted to make their day more interesting by interrogating crossers certainly, there was a multitude of options in-between but my black and white brain warned otherwise. One clinic had another accepted test but they had been receiving the results in random increments of time. We have started trying to set one day aside on the weekends to relax, hike, and re-energize. Watching my husband and our fur baby drive away the other day , I felt a bit like a cop out. It was cathartic and healing and an overall serious full-circle experience to ride into Town together, the three of us plus my nephew pup, Ruger of course , this time with Leona on the outside, squeaking and squealing and babbling her way through the normally 8-hour, turned hour, drive. I found a certain thrill in knowing it was just me out here in the vast wilderness, and that I had to figure everything out on my own. Thankfully, we ended up with plenty of salmon…….. Unexplainably, I did. I think it was a steady piece of driving, since we jumped the ditch instead of crashing into it or flipping over. The only illumination they provided to those five letters of frustration was this: It depends who is working. Beneath the Borealis. It was early in the rut, so the bull was starting to collect a few cows.
