Originally a member of the Dojima Family , he goes on to become the patriarch of the Nishikiyama Family. Nishikiyama has a muscular build and loose, black shoulder length hair in Yakuza 0 , as well as the prologue and flashback sequences in Yakuza Kiwami. Nishikiyama's tattoo depicts a red koi swimming upwards and was tattooed by Utabori. The koi is red with white fins and red scales with white edges. The koi is surrounded by gray waves.

He is Kiryu 's oath brother and the patriarch of the Nishikiyama Family. His best friend, Kiryu, often calls him by the name "Nishiki". His reasoning for joining was due to feeling indebted to Shintaro Kazama and the Yakuza for paying his ill sister's medical bills. Throughout the events of Yakuza 0, Akira was heavily against Kiryu's approach against the many trials he faced. After Kiryu was framed for murder and resigned from the Dojima Family to protect Shintaro Kazama's reputation, Akira stayed within the Yakuza. Upon Kiryu joining the Dojima Family's rival, Tachibana Real Estate, Akira, along with the others within the Family, were sent under the orders of Hiroki Awano, to hunt Kiryu down and return him to the Family, so that he can be sent to "The Hole" to suffer his punishment. Akira had planned to kill Kiryu to save him from the Dojima Family's torture, but was unable to. Kiryu tells him to act as if he never saw him, and promptly steals his fancy car, returning to Kamurocho to finish what he had started, to Akira's dismay. Kiryu later runs into Akira, who was ordered to kill Kiryu for causing so much trouble for the Family. One of the members offers Akira a promotion if he kills Kiryu, but he refuses and joins Kiryu in battle, later being Kiryu's aid throughout the events of the story. Akira Nishikiyama is a man of medium height and average weight.

Akira Nishikiyama is one of the characters in the Yakuza series. A member of the Dojima Family , together with Kiryu. Friends and sworn brothers, the two grew up together at the Sunflower Orphanage and joined the Dojima Family together. Blessed with cunning, wit, and the ambition to make use of them in order to climb the family ranks, he shows frustration at Kiryu's lack of drive to do the same. Behind his desire for success is his concern for the well-being of his sickly younger sister. Kiryu's closest friend, who grew up alongside him in Sunflower Orphanage. After Kiryu takes the blame for the murder of Sohei Dojima , Nishikiyama becomes a patriarch of his own family and secures the backing of the Omi Alliance to rise to power.
