The One Ring was the physical embodiment of Sauron's greed, domination and cruelty. Many figures in Middle Earth would be tempted by the power of the Ring and would be granted dreams of what it could offer them. However, the reality was that the Ring would destroy the minds of all but the most powerful, and those who could master it would see themselves become worse than the Dark Lord himself.
