They were founded by brothers Malcolm Young on rhythm guitar and Angus Young on lead guitar. Their music has been variously described as hard rock , blues rock and heavy metal , but the band calls it simply " rock and roll ". They are cited as a formative influence on the new wave of British heavy metal bands, such as Def Leppard and Saxon. Seven months after the release of Highway to Hell , Scott died of alcohol poisoning and the other members considered disbanding. However, at the request of Scott's parents, they continued together and recruited English-born singer Johnson as their new front man. Their first album with Johnson, Back in Black , was dedicated to Scott's memory. It became the second best-selling album of all time. The band's eighth studio album, For Those About to Rock , was their first album to reach number one on the Billboard Rudd has since recorded five more albums with the band, starting with Ballbreaker Their fifteenth studio album, Black Ice was the second-highest-selling record of and their biggest chart hit since For Those About to Rock , eventually reaching number one worldwide. The band's line-up remained the same for 20 years until , when Malcolm retired due to early-onset dementia , from which he died three years later; additionally, Rudd was involved in legal troubles.

On February 19,Scott was discovered passed out inside a Renault 5 vehicle owned by Alistair Kinnear.

The band's current touring lineup features Angus Young, vocalist Brian Johnson from to , and since , rhythm guitarist Stevie Young nephew of Angus and Malcolm Young, a member since , as well as touring musicans Matt Laug drums and Chris Chaney bass guitar. In February , after the release of Highway to Hell , Scott died to acute alcohol poisoning. Angus and Malcolm's nephew, Stevie Young , temporarily replaced Malcolm on guitar. It was later confirmed that he had rejoined for the Grammys and upcoming tour. On 7 March , the band announced that the final ten dates of the second North American leg of the tour would be rescheduled as Johnson's doctors had ordered him to stop touring immediately: he risked complete deafness if he persisted.

It is the first of three albums produced by Robert John "Mutt" Lange , and is the last album featuring lead singer Bon Scott , who died on 19 February The band's most recent album, the live If You Want Blood , had reached number 13 in the United Kingdom, and the two albums previous to that, 's Let There Be Rock and 's Powerage , had seen the band find their raging, blues-based hard rock sound. Although the American branch of Atlantic Records had rejected the group's LP Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap , it now believed the band was poised to strike it big in the States if only they would work with a producer who could give them a radio-friendly sound. Being told what to do was bad enough but what really pissed off Malcolm and Angus was they felt that George was being treated disrespectfully by Atlantic, like an amateur with no great track record when it came to production Malcolm seemed less pleased with the situation and went so far as to tell Radio 2JJ in Sydney that the band had been virtually "forced" to go with an outside producer. Losing Harry was one thing. Losing George was almost literally like losing a sixth member of the band, and much more. The producer Atlantic paired the band with was South African -born Eddie Kramer , best known for his pioneering work as engineer for Jimi Hendrix but also for mega-bands Led Zeppelin and Kiss. Kramer met the band at Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida but, by all accounts, they did not get on.

First released in Europe on 17 October and released internationally on 20 October , it was produced by Brendan O'Brien. The album was the band's final studio release to feature founding rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young , who left the band in September after being diagnosed with dementia , and died three years later. The album's development was delayed because bass guitarist Cliff Williams sustained an injury and the band changed labels from Elektra Records to Sony Music. O'Brien tried to recapture the rock sound of the band's early work, as opposed to the blues orientation of Ballbreaker and Stiff Upper Lip , with suggestions such as adding " soul crooning " to Brian Johnson 's singing. The songs were mostly recorded live in the studio; engineer Mike Fraser used only sparse overdubs and effects to keep the tracks as close to the originals as possible. Black Ice was released exclusively in physical formats, as the group did not sell its music digitally at the time. Wal-Mart got exclusive rights to distribute the album in North America. The production of Black Ice was delayed for several reasons. Johnson explained that the brothers had done most of the lyrical job, and his collaboration was that he "helped with melody and just filling in gaps that I thought needed filling in". According to Fraser, the band had not rehearsed the songs before entering the studio.
