The Space Marines , though few in number, stand as the greatest defenders of the Imperium of Man. Most new Space Marine Chapters are not created piecemeal as required by the Imperium of Man 's strategic needs, but rather in deliberate groups called a " Founding. The process by which a new Founding's creation is approved by the Imperial government is mysterious and arcane, subject to solar decades or even standard centuries of planning before it is announced. It is only by an edict of the High Lords of Terra that such an undertaking as the creation of new Chapters can be instigated, for it requires the cooperation and mobilisation of countless divisions within the Imperium's monolithic and vast governmental organisations. Establishing new Astartes Chapters on an individual basis is nigh impossible -- the mobilisation of such vast resources is beyond the ability of any single segment of the Imperium. The Adeptus Mechanicus plays an essential role in the process of a Founding, for its highest echelons are tasked with creating, testing and developing the gene-seed samples that will provide the genetic foundation of the new Chapters. Entire Forge Worlds may be turned over to the manufacture of the mighty arsenal of weaponry, ammunition, power armour , vehicles and starships that any such force will require. There are a myriad other concerns as well. A suitable homeworld inhabited by Humans must be identified for the new Chapter, which will likely provide not only a secure and defensible base of operations, but also a source of new recruits as well. Such worlds might have been reported by itinerant Rogue Traders and earmarked centuries before by Adeptus Mechanicus Explorators as potential Astartes homeworlds.

An Astra Militarum Ogryn serving as a Bullgryn. The Ogryn Homo sapiens gigantus are a huge and physically powerful Abhuman mutant subspecies of Humanity , often employed by the Imperium of Man as shock troopers in the Astra Militarum 's Militarum Auxilla. Ogryns possess many traits prized by the Imperium; they are brutally strong and completely loyal, although extremely limited intellectually, which restricts their battlefield role to simple and direct assaults. They hail from a series of cold and barren planets across the galaxy that possess high gravity, such as Anark Zeta , which is why they appear larger, heavier and bulkier compared to baseline Humans. Ogryns compensate for their mental deficiencies with overwhelming physicality -- the brutish creatures stand around 10 Terran feet 3 metres tall and can shrug off wounds that would kill an Imperial Guardsman several times over. These qualities mean that Ogryns make exceptional shock troops, and are often deployed on the front lines of battle by Imperial commanders. It is fair to say that Ogryns do have their limitations. Their equipment must be simple and exceptionally rugged, as anything within arm's reach is likely to see brief and violent service as an improvised club. Their heavily built Ripper Guns must also be fitted with burst limiters to stop the Ogryns from firing ceaselessly -- thirty solar seconds of noisy enjoyment can easily leave these Abhumans short of ammunition before a battle has even begun.

The Imperium of Mankind is the civilisation that is home to most of the untold billions of humans living across the galaxy. Most recently, Abaddon the Despoiler of the Black Legion has gained a new ally in Vashtorr the Arkifane, a mysterious daemonic being that seems to be the Chaos avatar of all things innovation and technology, and who is searching for an even more mysterious great weapon that will turn the tide of war. Other civilisations also have psykers: some Aeldari Farseers can predict the future, the Grimnyr of the Leagues of Votann wield the power of their Votannic ancestors through a selective cloning of genes with psychic potential, but noone are more tapped into the psychic potential of the Warp than the Forces of Chaos. He was also the first Imperial Warmaster , the most favoured son of the Emperor, and ultimately, the greatest traitor in the history of Mankind. Fast forward ten thousand years: The Imperium seemed almost certainly doomed when Ezekyle Abaddon, the Despoiler of the Black Legion and the leader of the human forces of Chaos, launched another of his Black Crusades, this time against Cadia, the one world that kept the gate to the Realm of Chaos closed. Guilliman, a brilliant strategist and organiser as well as a formidable warrior, revitalised the fight for the survival of the Imperium — but he also brought unrest and worry to the bureaucrats of Terra because of his attitude towards them: Having been gone for the last 10, years, he was still a secularist at heart just like his Father had been, and he looked at the superstition and senility of Imperial theocracy with horror, hoping to once again let reason and enlightenment rule, even if it meant going against what was perceived to be the will of the Emperor. But then, one of the Loyalist Primarchs returned. They have been active in the galaxy to achieve this goal, even playing a part in the resurrection of Roboute Guilliman, but unfortunately, the fifth Cronesword was to be located within the Palace of Slaanesh herself; making the task all but impossible to accomplish. The apocalyptic scenario to end all apocalyptic scenarios in 40K is that the barrier between the Warp and realspace will be definitively destroyed, and that all reality will be consumed by such demonic entities. This mixture of technology and Chaos can especially be seen within the Dark Mechanicum — the tech-priests of Mars who rebelled against their brethren at the same time as the Space Marines did. Ranged weapons and artillery, as well as all kinds of mechanized warfare, is common within most factions, and 40K has a couple of iconic weapon types such as the lasgun sort of stolen from Dune rifles that are basically the cheap AK47s of the 40K universe, and the terrifying bolters used by Space Marines, huge assault rifles that fire explosive rocket-like shells.
