When the nice guys came first: This Test, one with the highest stakes in history, has been a culmination of a two-year period in cricket that has seen countless obstacles, particularly beyond the boundary. The ICC's tested us with two cancelled events and COVID has tested us. And most recently, the rain has tested us. And yet Test cricket has prevailed, and provided us with a fitting spectacle for the ages - not in one of the coliseums of world cricket, but in the understated Hampshire bowl - a fitting metaphor for the quiet but immovable, unbreakable spirit of Test cricket. For Australia, the newly crowned champions, things are rosy. Their long English summer has gotten off to a perfect start. A convincing win against a team they've struggled against in the recent past. They had lost their previous four bilateral Test series, including two Down Under. And they brought out their A game here in the finale. They've ticked a lot of boxes ahead of the Ashes which is commencing on Friday. The Aussies last won a Test series in England way back in Can Cummins and Co. Smith and Head are in form, Carey has started superbly in England and their bowling is looking in great shape once again. That guy's accuracy is incredible. The tournament was played over two years, with 69 matches over 27 series scheduled for the league stage from which the top two teams advanced to a final. Each series consisted of two to five Test matches. Each participant played between 12 and 22 matches. The points system was changed from the previous edition. In this edition, 12 points would be available each match regardless of how many matches there were in a series. A win was worth all 12 points, a tie was worth 6 points each, a draw was worth 4 points each, and a loss was worth 0 points.
