For this week's review, Denise Evans headed to Penwortham to try the craft beer and pizza place. We have more newsletters. When I started writing food reviews, I was daunted at the idea of having to find 52 different restaurants to visit. Now, I don't mean literally as of course Lancashire is bursting with hundreds places to eat out, and thankfully I'm happy to see a large majority of them have survived the pandemic. My concerns were centred more on finding a subtle or obvious difference in each one, something that sets it apart from the rest. It got its moniker in tribute to the year the town's name was settled with the second part reflecting the food served and impressive range of craft ales available. It feels a little bit like you've walked into a tap room or beer hall when you first arrive, with two huge digital flatscreen menu screens displaying all beer buffs will expect in that kind of place - logo, the name of the brewery and beer or cider, its type IPA, bitter, lager, wheat, pilsner, pale ale, stout, porter , alcohol percentage and price. The interior is also the popular and cool industrial-chic style, with open brickwork, chunky wooden and metal piping shelves, steel surfaces and light fixtures and booth seating made out of woodchip, with some added shrubbery hanging from the ceiling and a fairy light-laden tree. So that's the craft part of the name well and truly boxed off. Now sadly, neither me nor my dining partner are particularly into beer and even if I wanted to, I probably would have procrastinated over the amount of choice for ages anyway and just got a wine. But I can say the restaurant was pretty full on a Tuesday night and I could see a diverse range of beers served to other tables, both from the tap and the huge beer fridges full of colourful cans, from Cloudwater Happy and Beavertown Helles to 's own pale lager. Also, speaking to people who do appreciate the cereal grain-based drink about my visit afterwards, their interest pretty much peaked when I said the words "pizza and beer". Without the menu screens, my eyes would have instantly been drawn to the disco ball Valoriani pizza oven sparkling away with all the sass and glamour of RuPaul at the back of the restaurant like a lighthouse beacon. It's truly fabulous and I didn't look out of place gawping at it and getting my phone out to take pictures, as several other tables near me were doing the same. The chefs were clearly used to it as they automictically shuffled out of shot.

I only mention that because I have found it is a detail often missed on tables-for-two - are they big enough to easily fit two massive pizzas and other bits and bobs? Vesuvius which ensures they are bursting with flavour and rich in vitamins.
