The Infinity Gems originally referred to as Soul Gems and later as Infinity Stones are six fictional gems appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics , named after and embodying various aspects of existence. The gems can grant whoever wields them various powers in accordance to the aspect of existence they represent, and have the potential of turning the wielder into a god-like being when the main six Mind, Power, Reality, Soul, Space, and Time are held together. Thus, they are among the most powerful and sought-after items in the Marvel Universe ; playing important roles in several storylines, in which they were wielded by characters such as Thanos and Adam Warlock. Some of these stories depict additional Infinity Gems or similar objects. Although, the Infinity Gems altogether give its user nigh-omnipotence, the Gems only function on the universe they belong to and not on alternate realities. The Gems have appeared in several media adaptations outside of comics, including the Marvel Cinematic Universe film franchise, where they are called Infinity Stones and have their colors altered. These changes were later adapted into the comics. The first appearance of an Infinity Gem occurred in in Marvel Premiere 1. It was originally called a "Soul Gem". In the limited series The Thanos Quest , Thanos refers to the entire main set as "Infinity Gems" for the first time. In this storyline, he steals most of the Gems for the second time and reveals the Gems to be the last remains of an omnipotent being. Although he easily repels an attack by Earth's heroes and other cosmic entities including Eternity , the Gauntlet is eventually stolen from him by Nebula , who undoes the last 24 hours, including his mass killings. Adam Warlock then recovers the Gauntlet and, by order of the Living Tribunal , divides the Gems that fit in the gauntlet among a group he calls "the Infinity Watch ", consisting of himself, the superheroes Gamora , Pip the Troll , Drax the Destroyer , Moondragon , and his former adversary Thanos. The group's adventures in defending the Gems appear in the series Warlock and the Infinity Watch — The 6 main Gems are next gathered by Warlock's evil alter ego , the Magus , in the limited series The Infinity War , where he is defeated by Warlock and Earth's heroes, including Thanos.

The First Firmament, [4] a universe full of Infinity Stones. The Infinity Stones formerly known as the Infinity Gems and the Soul Gems are powerful artifacts that originated from the original universe , found below the Quarry of Creation and inhabited by Celestials. Thanos was the first to use the six Soul Gems in unison. He intended to destroy the universe by using the Soul gems to destroy the stars. The Elders of the Universe were the second entities to use the gems in unison.
The stones were the one plot device standing in the shadows of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, from the early days with Thor through the final act of Phase 3. But the question remains, even now: What the heck are the Infinity Stones? And where are the stones now? The simple answer is the Infinity Stones are six items of great power, and Thanos wanted to collect them all for an obvious reason: rule the universe. The end of Infinity War and all of Endgame showed us the true extent of that power — but even after Captain America took them back in time and restore order to the universe, they keep popping up. Or make that the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse. Within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Infinity Stones are six artifacts that endow bearers with a variety of powerful abilities. When brought together into a glove known as the Infinity Gauntlet, the Stones give their user the power to reshape all of reality itself. The Stones have played minor roles as MacGuffins in many Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, and those assorted plot threads built up to the one-two punch of Avengers: Infinity War , a Marvel-y heist movie where the ownership and location of the Infinity Stones was everything, and Endgame , where Tony Stark got his own chance to snap back.

The Elders of the Universe were the second entities to use the gems in unison. Connecting the six Soul Gems to a device, they were able to use its beams to absorb the life energy of Galactus and transfer it to a barren planet, giving it life. However, the Silver Surfer interfered and destroyed the machine, and the gems were lost in a black hole. Because the Elders of the Universe were barred from entering Death's realm due to prior machinations of the Grandmaster, Galactus soon found himself being poisoned from within by the Elders he consumed. Fantastic, and the Invisible Woman journeyed through the black hole to recover the gems, where Invisible Woman became possessed by the sentient Soul Gem and had her evil Malice persona awakened. They then used their powers to free the Elders of the Universe who were trapped inside Galactus and restore him to full strength.

The Space Stone was found on an asteroid but was stolen by Nebula and he later took it back from her. When Thanos successfully collected all of them, he used their phenomenal powers to annihilate half of all living creatures in the universe. He first aged the Avengers until they died with the Time Stone, but Thor forced him to reverse time after causing the Titan's energy beam to backfire, aging him. Hulk was likewise able to survive a snap due to the energy released by the Infinity Stones being mostly gamma radiation , but this came at the cost of his right arm being severely injured. After torturing Strange to remove the enchantment on the Eye, Ebony Maw was sucked into the vacuum of space after being tricked by Tony Stark and Peter Parker.
