I had a conversation the other night with a dear friend of mine. We had a few baratie arc and some hookahs, so our minds were floating all over the place. That was the motive to rewatch the Baratie Arc to reminisce the first years of our favorite show, baratie arc.
The Straw Hat Pirates meet Johnny and Yosaku , old friends of Zoro , who direct them to the restaurant ship Baratie , a "floating oasis" in the middle of the ocean. There they meet chef Sanji , who Luffy wishes to recruit as his crew's cook. However, pirate admiral Don Krieg sets his sights on the Baratie as a replacement for his devastated fleet, and the restaurant soon comes under siege. As the battle breaks out, Zoro comes face to face with his ultimate rival, Dracule Mihawk , while Nami absconds with the Going Merry , forcing the crew to split up and take chase while Luffy protects the Baratie from Krieg. As a test of the ship's capabilities, Luffy and Usopp tested out one of the cannons on board by shooting at a rock formation. However, unbeknownst to them, two pirate hunters happened to be on the rock, and one of them attacked the ship in retaliation. Luffy fought him, but Zoro pointed him out to be a friend of his.

With Usopp making member four and the crew now having a official pirate ship, the next adventure begins with the crew picking up two bounty hunters who help them realize they need a cook. Luckily the duo lead the crew to the Baratie, a floating restaurant, where they meet Sanji. Getting a cook is the least of their worries however as the Baratie comes under siege by a ruthless armada captain, Don Krieg, who wants the Baratie as his own. The crew then look around their new ship, with Luffy and Usopp finding a cannon. Deciding to test its capabilities, Usopp fires at a nearby rock and manages to hit it. The crew then meet in the main cabin to discuss what else they'll need for the journey ahead when the ship is suddenly attacked. Luffy confronts the assailant and manages to beat him after a scuffle. Zoro then identifies the man as Johnny, a fellow bounty hunting friend of his. As it turns out, he and his partner, Yosaku, who is suffering from scurvy, were resting on the rock that Luffy and Usopp shot.
Surprisingly, Zeff gives a sack of food to Krieg and warns his cooks about the upcoming battle. The 4Kids version replaces Baratie arc darts with poison suction cups, and Sanji's cigarette for the whole series with a lollipop.
The arc begins with the Straw Hats Monkey D. Luffy , Roronoa Zoro , Nami , and the newly-joined Usopp checking out their new pirate ship as well as designing a Jolly Roger for it. However, unbeknownst to them, two pirate hunters happen to be on the rock, and one of them attacks the ship in retaliation. Luffy fights him, but Zoro points him out to be a friend of his. After the Straw Hats apologize and Nami cures Yosaku of his scurvy, the crew realizes that they are going to need a cook for the ship to maintain the healthy quality of their food stores before they can go to the Grand Line.
And it can go a long way to explaining how a live-action One Piece can do well on its own terms. But outside of those major beats, most of what happens between their arrival and Sanji becoming a Straw Hat is pretty different between the manga and the live-action series. In the manga, the majority of the arc revolves around the Straw Hats and the fighting cooks of Baratie facing off against the dreaded pirate Don Krieg, who was once the commander of 50 ships and 5, men before almost all of them were lost on the Grand Line, the most dangerous stretch of ocean in the world. But when Krieg orders Gin to kill Sanji, the pirate refuses to turn on his savior. For that act of mutiny Krieg tries to kill Gin, but winds up getting beat by Luffy in the process.

Shortly into the journey, they run into Zoro's cronies from his bounty hunting days: Yosaku and Johnny. These two don't add much to Zoro's character or the story, but the moment they cross, their path is surprisingly poignant. After initially clashing, Johnny backs down because his buddy cannot continue to fight due to scurvy. Nami quickly remedies this issue with some citrus, highlighting her diverse knowledge and skills as a crewmate. While accompanying Johnny and Yosaku to the floating restaurant, Baratie, Luffy accidentally damages the captain's quarters and injures the head chef, Zeff. In proper One Piece fashion, Luffy proceeds to wreak havoc as he attempts to make up for the indiscretions by working in the kitchen. Zeff tries his best to adapt to Luffy's nonsense to gain compensation for the destruction and teach Luffy a lesson. He is stuck taking care of the dining room since the wait staff abandoned the restaurant due to its dangerous location. Sanji's core characteristics are quickly displayed as he deals with a pretentious Marine lieutenant trying to put on airs. Lieutenant Fullbody tries to impress the stunning Moodie by lying about his wine knowledge, only to be checked by Sanji, who encourages him to eat his meal before it gets cold.

Don't have an account? The Baratie raises the battle fins, which protect the restaurant part of the Baratie, and the cooks and the Krieg Pirates begin to fight. He's a New World-level character who shows up in an East Blue arc more or less for the sole purpose of showing the reader how very, very far the Straw Hats have to go.
